Formal Devices - facade strategies & types of openings

Ribbon Windows versus Skylight
  • Ribbon Windows
    • Dividing 4 different categories on different side of the facade : (South-East: Bedroom for Master & Son) ; (South-West: Sum-trap Terrance) ; (North-West: Beautiful of View) ; (North-East: Services)
    • South-East facade
      • Since this is the south-east side, those openings is intend to let sunlight in especially for sunrise. It comes out with the idea of placing bedroom in those side. 
      • Representing the area of living 
      • The amount of ribbon windows can saturated the unity of the room and two extreme type of spaces in the master bedroom
      • Amount of sunlight can distinguish the type of space
      • Lighting Strategies can be defined the place between public and private
    • North-West & South-West facade
      • 2 types of opening appears 
        • full-glaze sliding panel
          • another medium allows sunlight to come inside the living area

      • providing comparison between the openings 
      • configuration responding to the opposed pull of sun and views
    • North-East favade
      • services sides can provide an environment for early working
    • Ribbon windows provide a panorama view 
    • Framing the landscape and the entire environment into a "photo-frame" like arts
    • Framing different angles through the environment will receive a dominant gradation of view
    • High level abstraction will be created in different angles
    • Provides differences between entire green environment and the living spaces
  • Skylight
    • Enhancing the type of space
      • Provide a bird-eye view from the private area
      • Highlighting privacy in the same area with enhancing circulations of the architecture

      • Leading audience from bathroom into master bedroom
      • Providing a "Solarium" inside the indoor area
    • Leading as an promenade architecture
      • Allows the promenade architecture strategies as using lights to integrate with circulations

Overall Structural Strategy

  • 16 grids as the principal of Golden Section
  • Columns are being placed in the wall
  • Pierced around without interrupted the view that provided by window 
  • Avoid exploding the structure elements on the outermost side
  • Free Floor Plan
    • taking the liberties
    • Pilotis are lifting up the first floor
    • Relieved the load-bearing wall
    • Partitions can be freely placed according where aesthetically needed
  • Free Facade
    • No longer being insulating of windows and walls
    • Columns can be placed inside the house rather on the surface
    • Floors can be freely continuous by constructing cantilever
  • There are different structures like in-filled structures and expose structures 
Architectural Attitude Towards Material
  • the materials of the color and materials used can reflect by how much light come inside the architecture
  • Green facade in the ground floor are providing the same color tone with the entire landscape
  • pioltis look light but the materials used is very hard
  • Black colour = strong and tough
  • Light color = light and dominant

Relationship between the Major Parts of the house

(a) Maximum Private Area

  • L-Shaped of the front yard. Most lousy at the the traffic junction that diminished the privacy. Which the entrance at the silent side will highly provide a preferable private area in it.
  • More enclosed at the side of the building will blocked the view from the pedestrian view. Only high windows could provided privacy by bringing sunlight inside the residential.
  • The garden behind the house and between the neighborhood since it already enclosed by the one beside it.
  • Placing staircase outside and lifting up the residential 
(b) Increase the spatial experience of the house
  • Glass increase the spatial depth extending to the outside
  • Cubic glazing provides a wide range angle to increase view angle
  • Glazing at the corner and the Cubic glazing offer farther view to outside since it  is not a directly increase both privacy and spatial occurrency

Relationship between the built area of the landscape
  • Since Frank Gehry Residential was built in Los Angles. This is the first and foremost state that promoted the individual rights and liberties, the city reflect omnipresence. Even architecture in LA are built in the constant motion. Without ordinarily support by context, Frank building integrated the city with mechanisms and interpreted as reflection on how the building in LA.

Structural System of the House

  • After deconstructed the residential, only beams, columns and post that construction materials are being left due to Gehry need to feel the physicality of the reality of the construction. 
  • Building surface like corrugated aluminium facade, plywood those materials are being left since Gehry comprehend the construction materials is fall beyond better than the finished apartment.
